The last eruption occurred in 1786 but scientists expect a possible revival. The Shasta has five glaciers, the longest of which descends to 2,900 m on the south side stands a secondary peak, called Shastina, 3,660 m high. Discovered in 1827 by Canadian fur trader Peter Skene Ogden, was first climbed in 1854 and is a favorite place for more experienced climbers. Many of attempted takeovers occur in winter.

Around Mount Shasta many legends have sprung up, let's read some beginning with the one linked to the natives of the place.

According to a legend of the Modoc Indians (reported by Ella Clark in 1953 and drawn to their oral tradition) at the beginning there were no men on earth ... the Spirit of Heaven lived in Over-the-World, but there was very cold. He dug, then, with a stone, a hole in the sky and pushed into the snow and ice. They both tumbled to the ground where accatastandosi, formed a high mountain.

Today it is called Mount Shasta. The Spirit of Heaven, given his big stick, passed from cloud to cloud to reach the summit of this mountain. After that he began to descend toward the floor. I walk, had the idea of doing with his finger, the small holes in the ground . For each hole, inserted a tree. And the snow melted under his feet, he formed the rivers. Completely satisfied with the results he, the Spirit of Heaven began to break his long stick into small pieces. Some of them were transformed into fish, beavers in other, other other small animals, so did all the beasts of the earth .

Thus were created also bears that were on their hind legs and talked like men. With their furry coat and their large claws, had looked so formidable that the Spirit of Heaven sent them far away from him, at the foot of the mountain. Once completed this immense work, the Spirit of Heaven sent down his family with him on the ground . They took home the big mountain of snow and ice in which he made a fire in the center and a hole at the top to let pass the smoke.

All went well until the spring when a violent storm shook the mountain. The fire was driven into the chimney and the earth trembled. The Spirit of Heaven asked his youngest daughter to climb the mountain to ask the Spirit of the wind to calm down a bit 'and warned her not to stick your head out of the chimney or the wind would carry away . The little girl promised but he knew that up there, you could see the ocean, this immense size d ' water did not know.

How can you resist the temptation to see it? He went out of his head and in less time it takes to say, the Spirit of the Wind tore it from the mountain and carried it away! He landed at the edge of the forest, among the fir trees covered with snow, in the territory of grizzly bears. One of them being hunted to feed his family, he found her and brought her to him to cure it. At that time these grizzlies were not so formidable as might seem. Having fond of the little girl, she decided, arbitrarily, to keep with it and raise it to the rank of the bears.

The child grew and became a woman, married the eldest son of the bear gray and both did children whose appearance was similar to that of the parents grizzlies. All the little family lived in a new home. This place is now called the small Mount Shasta. Time passed and when Grandmother Bear (the one that had brought the little girl) she heard his end, he saw the need to tell the truth to the Spirit of Heaven. So he sent him as emissary of the eldest of his grandchildren. The latter climbed to the top of Mount Shasta and fulfilled its task.

The Spirit of the Sky happy to learn that his daughter had been found, went to the home of grizzly bears. But was very surprised to see a woman instead of a child who had lost. Worse, he saw that his daughter lived in the midst of creatures with hairy coat that said they were his children, so his grandchildren: a race of creatures that had not created!
His anger was huge! He cursed all the grizzlies. "Get on all fours! I have done so much wrong that henceforth walk that way. Also, there's no word! "And off again on his mountains with his daughter and never returned by grizzlies. Rumour would have extinguished the fire that kept her in the mountains and would return to live in the sky. As for his grandchildren, scattered around the world and became the first Indians, the ancestors of all Indians. That is why the Indians who live near Mount Shasta is not the grizzly bear kill ever.

Let us now jump forward in time and find Mount Shasta shrouded in mystery. For many, the area around Mount Shasta is one of the most mystical places in the world and people come from far away to live in the shadow of the mountain. With stories of underground cities, flying saucers, unexplained lights and meetings with unusual beings, it would be difficult to predict a more mystical.

Mount Shasta has a peculiarity: there are over 400 caves formed by lava, a type of unknown cavities, but that is far from rare. Unlike other mountain that blend into the surrounding mountains, Shasta is isolated and stands on what appears to be a landscape almost flat. In part, this solitude which gives to Mount Shasta on its aura of mystery. The area around Mount Shasta has been inhabited for thousands of years by many Indian tribes.

However, it is only the beginning of 19 th century that the first Europeans to have laid eyes on him. The Spaniards named the mountain "Jesus-Mary", the Russians gave it the name "Tchastal," meaning "white mountain, or pure."

Of all the legends that surround the mountain, the most famous is the one that speaks of the Lemurians who are said to live in it. Refugees on the continent Lemuria or Mu, the Lemurians are described as tall and handsome. Equipped with long dresses and donning white sandals, would drop to the small town of Mount Shasta and have made use of gold nuggets for their supplies.

While it is said that Atlantis was in the Atlantic Ocean, Lemuria was in the Pacific. James Churchward in his numerous reports, wrote that the continent was so great that he went to California and Australia that covered most of the Pacific Ocean with a large mass of earth . Modern science has completely denied the possibility that such a large continent and have existed in the last 10,000 years, but it is possible that much smaller land have existed in the Pacific and the legends of Lemuria are not based entirely on speculation or dreaming fantasist . The test of a city of Lemuria came by astronomer Dr. Edgar Lucian Larkin, former director of the Mount Lowe Observatory, who has written on Mount Shasta in the "San Francisco Examiner".

One day, while he was testing a new telescope, directing his lens at the base of the mountain, instead of seeing the tops of trees, he observed a gold-domed building that appeared to be Asian. While continuing the observations, he saw two domes and a different building, apparently made of marble. As the sun descended and the night fell, dr. Larkin was amazed to see the area illuminated by a bright white light, although there was no moon . Unfortunately, these observations have never been verified, and many believe that the entire story is a hoax. And the lack of hard evidence has stopped hikers and explorers interested in viewing the mountain.

In 1904, an explorer named JC Brown was sent by Lord Cowdray, the "Mining Company", to search for gold in the Sierra Nevada. In his second trip , Brown ended up in a tunnel dug into the rock of Mount Shasta. He followed the tunnel and arrived in a large cave covered with layers of copper, the walls decorated with gold plates and saw objects, artifacts and statues. Adjoining rooms filled with unknown patterns and indecipherable hieroglyphics. Another room contained the bones of what could be a giant.

As often happens in this type of discovery, Brown has not told anyone what he had discovered, fearing that her employers directly appropriated to his discovery. He waited patiently for 30 years until his retirement so he told his story and created a group to follow him in his search of the mouth of the tunnel. In June 1934, 80 people have been waiting for him where he pointed to the entrance.

But in the night, mysteriously disappeared and was never found. The Stockton police investigated the case and came to the conclusion that Brown was likely killed. Without Brown, who acted as guide, the tunnel and all its treasures have never been rediscovered.

Lemurians are not the only mysterious beings to inhabit the slopes of Mount Shasta. In the spring of 1953, the shipment of the pioneer of Siskiyou, Marcelle Masson, connected to a legend of Wintun Indians on a wild race of giants which inhabit the caves around the mountain.

Mount Shasta has been the scene of many observations of unexplained lights and UFOs . In "Now I Can See!" - Miracle on Mount Shasta - Hanna Spitzer connects his vision of a very bright white light that quickly went into the street, and that "shines like the light of day." The next morning, Spitzer woke up to find that he did not need glasses that led from childhood. His vision had been cured.

Many of the stories about the Mount Shasta seem too fantastic. However, the volume of reports seems to lead to the undeniable conclusion that there is something uncommon in this area.
